i've got one picture on my phone from the day you passed away and it's a poster for the show i played that friday and i played modest mouse for you i sang my favorite song cause we used to be three and not just two and you were here but now you're not there's a car beneath the house and a kid in the tv and i swear right there beside the fridge something passed through me your landlord thinks you're being stalked says he don't believe in those things but what just lingers after death can stick around for centuries my friends saw you in their dreams said you came and sat and talked about ordinary things but just what they can't recall and i still don't know what that means or where your soul has gone but at least they said you looked happy like no time had passed at all oh, but you never come to me

getting my last fix allsup's coke and cigs now it's come to this the airport hassles the dallas assholes all you ever wanted was nobody to answer to all you ever wanted was everyone to carry you i can't sleep on planes i'm sober and insane and you don't entertain me like i thought you always would do all you ever wanted was no one to ask much of you all you ever wanted was somebody to care for you
3.
first night of tour at a club in holland i saw a poster inside with your picture on it a nice clean presser in black and white and i wondered if you thought about ending it that night waiting for the room to stop spinning a still from the film detroit rock city you passed away about the same time i was thinking of that movie and i don't know why so i'm thinking that tonight maybe i'm gonna go downtown and see my baby i'll do it just to make her sorry i'm gonna burn myself alive and make her watch me
4.
Gold 04:35
you drank poison in court like gold down the emperor's throat and i saw you in your casket bloated and looking like shit so i just stared at my shoes cause i didn't recognize you until your funeral pyre down there by the playa i watched you drift away into the sky to greet the day and i'm running out of advice that anyone couldn't find in some hallmark gift card soft pink covered with hearts and now i just feel queasy any time i hear my phone ring and now all the love inside me just makes me feel weary i want to drift away
5.
Lonesome Ivy 04:37
a wise fool turned to me and said whiskey makes me normal again and i'm him or maybe he is me either way is no way to be and one of these days it's gonna blow in cold and you'll ask where do i go and i'll say honey have no fear anywhere as long as it's not here but oh lonesome ivy please don't die on me i'll keep you fighting and someday i guess i'll meet the king of kings and i'll get down on my knees and ask him as i point to me could you make me another one of these? but old whispering ivory i keep on trying but i think you're dying
6.
The Stranger 03:56
black cat walked inside held his head up high said old black's coming and y'all all'd better hide and not just some dead star or old neil young's guitar but the last thing waiting for a man in his life i'll finish my drink i said and have one more cigarette and if old black comes in then i'll say hey there friend he's an honest man i've heard and one look at me i'm sure he'll see i ain't done nothing to offend well i ain't a bad man from what i can tell i've done no wrong i've wished no one ill but i keep on seeking the wrong kind of thrills i'm ready to die, i'm ready to kill well the barroom cleared out quick but i just thought i'd stick around to see if death was the drinking kind he came walking in and i turned to him and grinned and i wound up on the wrong end of his knife well i ain't a bad man i just ain't too bright i'm in a different shithole every night but i just keep meeting the wrong stranger's eyes i'm ready to kill, i'm ready to die
